Small Business Leadership: Recommitment Solution

Posted by Catherine Bernard

How can an entrepreneur lose his entire team, save one and rebound to the pinnacle of achievement among his peers?

Enduring the loss of an experienced team, finding jobs in other states for displaced employees to work, handling an emotionally distraught customer base – all while having no permanent office from August 2005 through June 2006. My team achieved the coveted Chairman’s Circle honor from the company I represent for two consecutive years following Katrina’s unwelcome visit.

How can you come back from that and make Chairman’s Circle in two years? That involved losing people, rebuilding, starting over, and moving 30 miles from our original office.

Very responsibly, the insurance company I represent had made a decision to restrict the amount of homeowner’s insurance we could offer. Essentially, they had said, “We talked to some weather forecasters and we believe that in the near future a Category 5 hurricane will hit and destroy New Orleans.”

998420 miss summer resized 600

At the time, all I could see was that they wanted to take my opportunity away. I thought they were making up this story about a Category 5 hurricane that would hit New Orleans. We hadn’t had a big hurricane hit New Orleans since Betsy in 1965.

I had begun slowly disengaging years before, but I reached my highest level of disengagement in 2004—a year before Katrina would attempt to drown our hopes and dreams. I was very bitter and thought I knew more than the company. I focused more on being a scratch golfer than on leading my team and being the example.

If you can relate, don't stop reading now! Do you realize you already have read the solution? That solution is recommitment. Now is the time for you to consider not only reading about it, but it’s time to start living the recommitment solution.

I read my goals for Chairman’s Circle several times every day. I had them taped to my credenza and thought about them all day, every day.

I enrolled my team in an Agency Development Program (ADP). It helped us to reengage, identify the building blocks, and to focus on being there for others and making a difference in their lives. ADP was about growth, finding common ground, reassessment, and self-evaluation.

I stumbled upon tandem appointments, which helped take us to the top. There were training benefits, multiline benefits, revenue benefits, and higher value benefits. I embraced Paper Days & People Days. My lunch hour was always intentional.

Entrepreneurs and small-business people are the most important people in my city (yours too, in case you haven’t thought about it). People look to you for leadership— economically and emotionally, whether it is verbalized or not. You are always being observed. Realize that others will model your behavior, especially if they perceive you as being in a position of power and influence. Therefore, be extremely protective of how you spend your time and who you spend it with. Live your life by appointment and schedule your appointments for your up- coming month first. Before all other appointments. Set appointments for yourself to be alone, to read, ponder and “be.”

Why did I become reengaged? Because I felt needed again. It became about the customers and not about me.

Please share your ideas about staying motivated, recommitting to your goals and becoming more successful.  Remember, I am always available for a free virtual cup of coffee to discuss your business!  I want you to be successful.

Small Business Leadership: Kiss Ugly Frogs Early

Posted by Catherine Bernard

Procrastination can be an unwanted and burdening especially for small business owners. Tackling procrastination can be one of your most rewarding accomplishments because it will cause a chain reaction of success in your life.small business leadership

A lady once needed to make a very important business call to a customer, but she had to convey bad news when she made the call. She put the call off and was anxious and nervous all day long. When she eventually had to make the call, she found that it did not turn out to be as bad as she had built it up.

A good lesson to learn is to kiss all the ugly frogs early in the day. The childhood story about the princess and the frog is where this saying originated - the princess should start with the ugliest frog to get the worst out of the way, so that all the other frogs don't seem quite so repulsive. Taking on the toughest tasks first gets all the difficult tasks out of the way, and opens your day up to handling the easier and smoother tasks later on. Avoiding procrastination can reduce your stress and anxiety levels as well as make you a more productive person and business owner.

An important mantra that is printed in my book Come Hell or High Water is:

"Tomorrow I will do everything that should be done, when it should be done, and as it should be done. I will perform the most difficult task first because this will destroy the habit of procrastination and develop the habit of action in the workplace."

You are encouraged to repeat this mantra before you go to bed each night as you begin your efforts to tackle procrastination in your work life as well as your personal life. Procrastination does not need to hold you back and keep you from the success that you richly deserve. Tackle procrastination and with a good attitude and dedication you can beat the habit and rise to a new level of productivity.

2. Quit telling people your secrets when you know they are not going to keep them! And if you keep telling them, then quit getting mad when they tell your secrets!

3. Quit trying to pull people on your journey who don't want to travel with you. Either they believe in you and value you...or they don't!

4. Quit complaining about things you can't and won't change!

Small Business and Leadership: How to Get out of Life's Sand Bunkers

Posted by Catherine Bernard

Are there days in your life that happened many years ago that you can vividly still recall? You can feel the wind, the warmth of the day, the smells, the colors. You can remember what clothes you had on. You can remember who was with you.motivational leadership photo

Well, our most memorable days are usually our most emotional ones. During those days, we were challenged or provoked, positively or negatively.

And so it was on that March day in 1992 that I was experiencing one of "those days" on the golf course. It was a Friday and I was hopeful that I would have a quality round of golf before heading in for a nice meal around 6pm and then relax for the night. But it just wasn't to be.

For you see on that day I was experiencing the repetitive misfortune of hitting my golf ball either in fairway sand bunkers or green side bunkers. As I recall, on the 18 holes I played that day (if you wanna call it that), I "succeeded" in landing in 16 bunkers. Well you would think that's what really got me riled up. Oh no! Not so. What really got me riled up is that I LACKED THE SKILL to get out of those sand bunkers.

So there I was. For 4 and half hours, seemingly living in the sandpit of hell. I was miserable. I was embarrassed. It was humid, i was hot. I was full of gritty sand, seemingly lodged in undiscovered body crevaces. I lost every bet to every person I was playing against that day. And by the 18th hole, after paying off all my losses and not taking it out on my playing partners, I walked to the corner of the driving range where the practice bunker awaited the arrival of my sorry ass. Beleagured and beaten. The sand had won.

Folks, it was there that I "lost it". Yep I "boiled over", got "pissed off" or as we say down in South Louisiana, I caught the "red ass".

I proceeded to have a nice long, enthusiastic talk with myself and decided in that fury of self dialogue that I was not going home until I learned how to hit a shot out of the sand bunker.
So I called my wife and told her my plan. "I am dropping 500 golf balls into the practice sand bunker and I'm gonna hit every darn one of them". It was a short conversation as you might expect.

So I rounded up 500 balls and began to: PRACTICE!

LESSON: Are you mature enough to accept the fact that there are AREAS that you LACK SKILL? Many people get stuck on stupid in this key stage. Why? Because they live in a state on constant DENIAL. I had to be honest with myself and admit that I HAVE A PROBLEM AND THAT YOU CAN'T FIX IT FOR ME.

I headed into the sand bunker with hundreds of balls and started practicing. Early on, I m not gonna lie to you. I was 8 still working to get the anger and frustration out of my being. Balls went everywhere. Then a small discovery was made. Swing harder and swing THROUGH the sand, not AT the sand.

My backswing in the sand became more relaxed. The next 200-300 balls were still not landing with any reasonable pattern or control, but the balls were successfully leaving the sand.
Sidenote: Leaders are sometimes way too impatient because they are expecting immediate complete results.

The practice bunker taught me to EMBRACE SMALL INCREMENTAL IMPROVEMENTS because they always precede the BIG RESULT you ultimately are seeking.

I seem to recall taking a break and grabbing a swig of water after pounding at about 300 balls. The transformation of my bunker skills had begun. Right now, I can remember re-entering that bunker with a sense of calmness that I had never had before. I had FACED MY FEAR head on and it was working. But not without MASSIVE ACTION.  (Did you catch that last line. Go back and read it again. Slowly.)
During the last leg of hitting the final 200 balls, I began to fine tune the more intricate details of bunker play. Things like "feeling" the back swing and "visualizing" what type of swing is needed to propel the ball into the air at the right distance. Other things like hitting out of a thin bunker lie (a bunker shot has very little sand at the base of the ball) or a fluffy lie (- bunker shot that has far too much sand all around it making the shot very unpredictable upon its exit.)

So here's what happened. After crawling out that practice bunker, 500 balls later I was exhausted - spent. I was also happy, fulfilled and excited about "tomorrow on the course".

My time would come that I would master bunker play in the heat of competitive rounds, but it would have to be delayed.
Because you see, while in my "trance-like" practice, I created blisters and both hands were bleeding and beginning to swell.

LESSON: Sometimes you have to push yourself to the brink before you can truly realize your potential.

LESSON: Far better it is to spend time in recuperation knowing that it was time well spent in the attainment of better skills.

So here's our lessons to reflect on.
LESSON #1: Are you mature enough to accept the fact that there are AREAS that you LACK SKILL?

LESSON #2: Sometimes you have to push yourself to the brink before you can truly realize your potential.

LESSON #3: Far better it is to spend time in recuperation knowing that it was time well spent in the attainment of better skills.

Develop the Ability to recognize that you lack a certain Skill(s)

  • Embrace your issues of Denial

  • PRACTICE!

  • If YOU have a problem then it is YOUR Problem to FIX!

  • Embrace Small incremental improvements.

  • Face your Fear then conquer it with Massive Action

  • Sometimes you have to push yourself to the brink before you can realize your true potential

  • Far better it is to spend time in recuperation, knowing that it was time well spent in the pursuit of better skills or a worthy goal.

Use this article in an "alone" session. And yes, you should have a meditative "alone" session at least once a week. No kids, no spouse, no distractions, no phones, no co-worker, usually inspired by or in nature.

Small Business Leadership: Likes and Dislikes

Posted by Catherine Bernard

In the early 1990s, I was a State Farm agent in St. Bernard Parish. (A
Louisiana Parish adjacent to the east side of Orleans Parish) I had not
been an agent more than four or five years. I vividly remember that day
whereby we had a visiting agent come in and speak to our business group.

On this particular day our speaker was named Jay Butler. Jay Butler hadMarvin LeBlanc list photo
recently retired. He was from the California area if my memory serves me
correctly. His passionate purpose was to travel across the country
discussing some interesting ideas and giving back to his State Farm
“family”. Jay knew that he was in his final months fighting pancreatic
cancer. And because he knew his time was limited he actually worked 7 days a week graciously meeting with clients on Saturdays, Sundays or anytime.

All of us at one time or another have been told, “you know if you go to a
seminar or a workshop and you pick up JUST ONE GOOD IDEA then it was worth all your time.” Well on this particular day, the ONE GOOD IDEA that has
stayed with me for so long and I believe it can help you today is simply
this.

Dislikes/Likes

Take out a Yellow Pad and draw a line down the center of the page. On the
left side of the page start listing all of the things that you do not like
to do in your current job. So, take some time, maybe pause from reading
forward, and really think of all the things that you do not like to do and
write them down.

Now after really working hard on listing the “DISLIKES”, now turn your focus
to the right side of the page. Your “LIKES”. Vertically write down all the
aspects of your job or your career that you really do enjoy & like to do.
Maybe even love to do.

Although this idea’s simple, it is profound. Some of you wont take this
exercise serious enough. Because you long for and search for “the answer”.
And for it to be “the answer”, it has to be more complicated.

WRONG!
Here’s the key points.

1. Every day, when you wake up, you need to spend your time focusing on only doing the things you like to do. Resolve and commit to hiring and creating a team of people that their strengths are the things that you do not like to do, and let them do it. Did you really catch that last statement?

2. You cannot amass major income without first mastering the ability to
delegate. But you need to delegate your DISLIKES to team members that are
strong in that area. Their LIKES must be your DISLIKES.

3. You will constantly need to scout and recruit new talent. You don’t do
that just once a year, because you never know when you will lose a team
member. Things happen, people get jobs in different locations, sickness,
health problems, death, accidents. Many perils in life can happen, so you
always must continue to look for people who would be an asset to your team.
But what you cannot do is continue to fool yourself and live under the
illusion that you’re going to ever be strong in the areas that you’re weak.

4. There’s a man by the name of Dan Sullivan. He’s the co-owner with his
wife in their company, “The Strategic Coach”. And one of Dan Sullivan’s
philosophies is simply this: If you spend your entire life focusing on your
weaknesses, what you’re going to have at the end of your life is a long list
of strong weaknesses, but they’re still going to be weaknesses. You are
hard-wired for success, but you have to determine what it is that you’re
good at, and only do that.

The Jay Butler story is an excellent story about giving back to us in his
last year of life, when he knew that he was terminally ill. And the ONE
GOOD IDEA that I’ll always remember is to focus on the things you do well
and delegate to others the things you do not do well that they actually are
strong in.

Small Business Sales: Increase Referrals For Free

Posted by Catherine Bernard

Hello Marvelous People!

That’s right. You heard correctly. There is a way that you can generate referrals without constantly throwing money into advertising campaigns that never seem to be able to even track your return on investment.

This idea is so simple, that many of you will over-analyze it and do nothing.

Imagine the hundreds of emails that you constantly send out. Emails that the recipient refers back to from time to time. Emails that the recipient archives in their CRM software for future referral.  This is an example of drip marketing at its best.

IDEA: From now on, on the bottom of all those emails that you are forever sending out to friends, neighbors, co-workers & relatives, you will add the following tag message.

So go now and “drip yourself some referrals”. There’s nothing for you to think through. The work has already been done for you. JUST DO IT!

TAG:Marvin LeBlanc Referrals

Will you help us?

While most professionals feel they need to spend 50% of their time looking for new business, my team & I do not agree. In fact, we prefer to spend as much time as we can taking care of our existing customers. We don’t have to spend all of our time looking for new business like others, because we prefer to work with people that are personally introduced to us.

We prefer to work with people much like you. With that in mind, would you be willing to help us by sharing the names of 2 families or 2 Small Business Owners that we can discuss their _______ concerns? We would be grateful if we had your permission to use you as a reference.

Motivational Speaker: How to be Motivated and Excited Everyday

Posted by Catherine Bernard

When people first meet me, (or you for that matter), they immediately start making one of three decisions. This begins with the very first impression. Face-to-face or through technology.

They choose:motivation

1. No, I’m not on the same page with you.
2. Yes, I get you and your message and we ARE on the same page and I want to know more.
3. Maybe, I need more time to get to know you, your information and what you’re all about.

Many people that know me know that I, rarely if ever, have a bad day. Seriously. Now I know what some of you are thinking while you’re reading this. “Marvin, don’t give me that “PollyAnna” crapola, (one of Gitomer’s
favorite words) that all is right with you and your world. We know better. We know you have problems.”

My answer: well of course I have “stuff”. We all have “stuff”. We always WILL have “stuff”. But, how quickly you MOVE ON from one pile of “stuff” to the next is my secret life weapon. That weapon – that unique ability that I
have developed, (beginning in 1978) is how I overcome and overachieve.

What I EXPECT is what I GET. I EXPECT much out of myself and I get much out of myself.
* I’m not blessed with height. (I’m a short, round Cajun.)
* I’m not blessed with good looks. (I had the biggest ears in my 4th Grade Class and the picture is on my Facebook to prove it)
* I was not highly educated at Tulane or Harvard. (But I bleed LSU purple & gold)

What do you EXPECT out of yourself? Are you GETTING what you EXPECT? Are you GIVING what you EXPECT?

I will definitely admit that I do have bad “moments” in my days, but I don’t have bad days.

On Oct. 20th of 2007 my daughter & I were riding my Honda Goldwing. It was a gorgeous, sunny, dry day. We decided to take the scenic River Road out of LaPlace, Louisiana (Hwy.44) – instead of taking the interstate. We were listening to Buddy Guy on my iPod. And then in a flash, we were catapulted directly over the front of my Goldwing. A careless, elderly driver had “T-boned” us.

My daughter lay motionless, face down on the asphalt in the lane of oncoming traffic. Immediately I looked down to see the bones in my right wrist displaced and broken from the impact. We both went over the top of his car. We both were heavily armored with proper bike wear. Besides some lower back pain that my daughter had, she is fine. I incurred 32 stiches in my wrist and 2 screws (my joints tell me when it’s going to rain.) The elderly driver is no longer with us.

But here’s the real point. That was NOT A BAD DAY!!!

WHY? Because we still made it home in time to watch LSU beat Auburn!!! 30-24(LSU had the ball in field goal range at the end of the game, but did not use its remaining timeout, instead calling a pass into the end zone,
which went for the winning TD with 1 second left, keeping our national championship hopes alive. By the way, we won the National Championship in 2007 beating Ohio State 38-24. That was the night that the Buckeyes couldn’t spell O-H-I-O with their big flags. My daughter and I were there. That was NOT A BAD DAY, now was it?)

Now — stop and really hear me.  IT’S WHAT YOU FOCUS ON THAT MATTERS!! IT’S what you CHOOSE to think that matters!

Quit obsessing about what you don’t have. And start obsessing about what you DO HAVE. Start obsessing about what your OPPORTUNITIES are that you can capitalize on. If you’re in a bad work relationship or you’re in a bad personal relationship, make a MOVE!!! This thing called “LIFE” is not a dress rehearsal. Make a MOVE and stop BITCHING!! Hug the people you love and mean it!! Tell people you love them and mean it!!

Well Marvin, you don’t understand my circumstances.

Really? Well then let’s talk about it. No, really. I’m serious. Let’s set an appointment. 15 minutes. And after 15 minutes, you can make one of three decisions about me.

Yes, No or Maybe. We’ll both be better people after the 15 minutes are completed.

Some homework before we talk.

** What specific tools or skills are you lacking that keeps you “stuck” too long?
** Do you honestly believe that things can change for you without you changing?
** Who do you have in your life that is an Accountability Partner that keeps you moving in the right direction?

PS: Did you know that you can leave your comments and opinions and feedback about this blog right here at the site? Please do it. For the benefit of others. We really want to hear what you have to say.

Motivational Speaker: Soft Stuff is the Hard Stuff

Posted by Catherine Bernard

Hello Marvelous People!

Okay, by now you should be sick of articles and blog posts that talk about your 2011 goals.motivational speaker marvin leblanc goals

But have any of those articles “INSPIRED YOU TO ACT”? Because if you have a perfect plan and you don’t BEGIN TO EXECUTE THAT PLAN WITH MASSIVE ACTION, then you will spend 2011 just like you spent 2010. It’s time to DO MORE, BE MORE, EXPLORE MORE! Don’t just be a candle in the wind, Marvelous People. As my mentor, friend and Certified Speaking Professional Mikki Williams says: “BE OUTRAGEOUS, it’s the only place that’s not crowded!”

May I offer this one warning? Go back and look at your 2011 “WRITTEN GOALS”. (Yes, written. If it’s not written, it’s not a goal, it’s a dream. More specifically, it’s a fantasy pipe dream that’s not going to come true for you.)

Assuming you are NOW looking at your written goals, can you honestly point to an item that has anything to do with the subject of Personal Development Training? Personal development training is not company training. Point: you may know company knowledge, policies and procedures but without developing your soft skills, your effectiveness will be severely limited. Complete knowledge, policies and procedures do not make you more productive – personal development and human relation skills do.

The soft skills are the hardest skills to master. Human Relations Skill development is critical. Human Relations Skill development does not have a destination. It is an endless journey. Work harder on yourself than any other item.

So here’s your CALL TO ACTION.
1. Stop planning. Start MASSIVE ACTING on your plan.
2. Let yourself go for – MORE!
3. Put your WRITTEN Goals in your Purse, Wallet, Refrigerator and Bathroom Mirror NOW!
4. The Soft Stuff is the Hard Stuff!

Peace, Love and Gumbo!

Small Business Leadership: What Your Customer is Thinking

Posted by Catherine Bernard

Marvin LeBlanc customer loyalty

1. “Hold up, Hold up, slow down will ya?” You’re talkin’ too fast and your enthusiasm is kinda scaring me.  Other people that I know that are “fast talkers” don’t let me get a word in & it really makes me feel like it’s a one-way conversation.  Because it is.  Don’t tell anybody, but if you really want me to buy, just ask me value-oriented, interest bearing questions that allow me to do most of the talking.

2. When you called me, you explained to me that you were gonna tell me who your company is, what you do & how it can benefit me.  So, if it’s not askin’ too much, when you show up, can you cover what you wanna tell me exactly in that order?  I seem to be so much more impressed when someone engages me with organized, thoughtful conversation.

3. Take a HINT! And get a MINT! Oh, I’m sooo sorry.  I really don’t wanna hurt your feelings.  But your breath speaks so loudly that I don’t want to hear a single thing you have to say.  There’s no recovery you can make from starting off with bad breath.  So take a hint & get a mint!

4. Now remember, on the phone, you asked me for 22 minutes of my time, right? So please don’t make me have to stand up first so that you can get the hint that your 22 minutes is up.  Rather, be courteous and remind me that our time is up & LET ME DECIDE if you’ve been interesting enough to warrant more of my time.  If it’s not, don’t get snotty or snippy with me.  HINT! If you didn’t get me interested in the first 22 minutes, you won’t get me interested for the next 22 hours either. You want me to respond better.  Then you need to GET BETTER!

That’s it for now.   Except for this one last question for you, “HOW CAN I MAKE MARVELOUS HAPPEN WITH EVERY CUSTOMER INTERACTION?”

Until next time – Be Marvelous in your small business leadership!
